USS Lexington (CV-2) 30.17"

USS Lexington (CV-2) was a Lexington class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy. She was laid down as a battle cruiser on January 8, 1921 by Fore River Shipbuilding Company in Quincy, Massachusetts, but was authorized to be completed as an aircraft carrier on July 1, 1922. Lexington was launched on October 3, 1925 and commissioned on December 14, 1927.

On April 7, 1928, she joined the battle fleet in San Pedro, California, operating on the west coast with Aircraft Squadrons, Battle Fleet in flight training, tactical exercises, and battle problems. Each year she participated in fleet maneuvers in the Hawaiians, the Caribbean, eastern Pacific, and off the Panama Canal Zone.

On January 16, 1930, Lexington completed a 30-day period of furnishing electricity to Tacoma, Washington, in an emergency due to failure of the city's power supply. The electricity from the carrier amounted to more than 4.25 million kilowatt-hours. In 1941, she sailed with the battle force to the Hawaiians for tactical exercises.

Lexington was in the Pacific when word was received that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor. She took part in the abortive attempt to relieve Wake Island in December 1941, which was the Navy's first wartime operation. From February to March 1942, she raided Japanese positions in the southwestern Pacific, then returned to Pearl Harbor for a brief overhaul and removal of her eight-inch guns.

In early May, Lexington returned to the South Pacific to join USS Yorktown in successfully countering the Japanese offensive in the Coral Sea. On May 7 and 8, 1942, her planes helped sink the small Japanese aircraft carrier Shoho and took part in attacks on the large carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku. However, she became the target of Japanese carrier planes and received two torpedo and three bomb hits. She sank on May 8, becoming the first US aircraft carrier to be lost in World War II. Lexington received two battle stars for her service in the war.

Bring any empty space to life with the USS Lexington wooden ship model. From planning to packaging, each step is performed with utmost care; everything is done by hand. Master craftsmen become magicians as they turn simple pieces of mahogany into ship replicas. After the wood is sanded and puttied, talented artists duplicate every single detail with extraordinary accuracy. Hand-casted resin and handmade metal parts complete the ship. A final coat of clear lacquer provides lasting protection for the product. Each model ship comes on a display base with brass pedestals and a brass name plate, and undergoes various stages of quality control before being put in its protective wood crate. All large models are shipped via FedEx Next Day Air.
