USS Makin Island (CVE-93) 31.98"

USS Makin Island (CVE-93) was the 39th Casablanca class escort aircraft carrier of the US Navy. The 7,800-ton vessel was laid down on January 12, 1944 by Kaiser Shipbuilding Company, Vancouver, Washington; launched on April 5, 1944; and commissioned on May 9, 1944 at Astoria, Oregon.

After a brief west coast shakedown cruise, Makin Island departed San Diego on June 19, 1944 to ferry aircraft and men to Pearl Harbor, Majuro, and Kwajalein. She then trained out of San Diego preparing for combat operations until October 16, when she sailed for Ulithi, via Pearl Harbor and Eniwetok, arriving on November 5. On November 10, she got underway for Leyte, protecting convoys in transit to the invasion beachhead. She then sailed to Manus on November 22 for the forthcoming invasion of Luzon.

In February and March 1945, Makin Island took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima, again in a close air support role. Later in March, she began her next operation, the campaign to seize Okinawa and other islands in the Ryukyus. She remained on station for 67 days, flying constant fire support, supply, and reconnaissance missions for the ground forces. She sailed again on July 11 to provide air cover for ships conducting minesweeping and raiding operations in the East China Sea, and to launch air strikes against Japanese targets on the Chinese coast. She finished the year carrying war veterans home from the western Pacific.

Makin Island was decommissioned on April 19, 1946 at Puget Sound and was sold for scrapping on January 1, 1947. She received five battle stars for World War II service.

With the USS Makin Island wooden ship model, one can almost hear the roar of the ocean waves. It is an exact replica of the original, handmade with vigilance, from the very first to the last step. Master craftsmen diligently carve high quality mahogany to create the ship's form. After it is sanded and puttied, skilled artists paint on the intricate details. Hand-casted resin and handmade metal parts also constitute the model. Clear lacquer provides the finishing touch and long-lasting protection. Each ship comes on a a display base with brass pedestals and a brass name plate. All items then undergo quality control and are delivered to eagerly waiting customers in professionally-packaged wood crates via FedEx Next Day Air. More than just a display piece, the Makin Island ship model is a work of art.
