USS Nevada (BB-36) 24.96"

USS Nevada (BB-36) was first of a class of two 27,500-ton battleships. Her design was a radical departure from those of previous battleships; she had maximum armor over critical areas and none over less important places, while earlier battleships had armor of various thickness, depending on the importance of the area it was protecting. She was laid down on November 4, 1912 by the Fore River Shipbuilding Company, Quincy, Massachusetts; launched on July 11, 1914; and commissioned on March 11, 1916.

Nevada operated in the western Atlantic and the Caribbean until mid-1918, when she went to the British Isles for World War I service. In September 1922 she represented the United States in Rio de Janeiro for the Centennial of Brazilian Independence. From July to September 1925, she participated in the US Fleet's goodwill cruise to Australia and New Zealand.

Nevada underwent modernization from 1927 to 1930, exchanging her “basket” masts for tripods. The upgrade also included the installation of a new superstructure, relocation of her five-inch secondary battery, new anti-aircraft guns, and significant improvements to her firepower and protection. On December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor, she was the only battleship able to get underway, thus becoming the object of intense attacks by Japanese aircraft. She received repairs at Pearl Harbor and Puget Sound Navy Yard, returning to combat during the Attu landings in May 1943.

In 1945, Nevada assisted with the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Returning to Pearl Harbor after a brief occupation duty in Tokyo Bay, she was surveyed and assigned as a target ship for the Bikini atomic experiments. That experience left her damaged and radioactive, and she was formally decommissioned in August 1946. After two years of inactivity, she was towed to sea off the Hawaiian islands and sunk by gunfire and torpedoes. Nevada received seven battle stars for World War II service.

At Maritime Modelworks, we bring ordinary wood models to life. Each museum quality USS Nevada ship model is created step-by-step meticulously. No machines are involved in the process; everything is made by hand. Skilled craftsmen chip away at a piece of mahogany until a ship appears, which is then sanded and puttied. Hand-casted resin and handmade metal parts are also added. Gifted artists paint on the colors and all details, no matter how big or small. Afterwards, clear lacquer is applied for protection. Each model ship is complemented with a handsome display base with brass pedestals and a brass name plate. Products are always double-checked before being delivered to customers in professionally-packaged double-lined boxes with high density foam.
