USS Herbert J. Thomas (DD-833) 24.4"

USS Herbert J. Thomas (DD-833) was a Gearing class destroyer of the United States Navy. She was named for Herbert Joseph Thomas Jr., a Sergeant in the US Marine Corps and a Medal of Honor recipient for his heroic actions during World War II. The ship was laid down on October 30, 1944 by Bath Iron Works Corporation, Bath, Maine; launched on March 25, 1945; sponsored by Miss Audrey Irene Thomas, sister of Sergeant Thomas; and commissioned on May 29, 1945.

Following shakedown, Herbert J. Thomas transited the Panama Canal and joined the Western Pacific Forces supporting the occupation of Japan and Korea at war's end. From February 1947 to May 22, 1950 she conducted operations along the East Coast and in the Caribbean, as well as made three deployments with the 6th Fleet to the Mediterranean. When hostilities broke out in Korea in June, she immediately proceeded to Pearl Harbor and joined the Pacific Fleet. In July she joined Task Force (TF) 77 operating off the coast of Korea in the Yellow Sea, and a month later she was assigned to the blockading force on Korea's east coast, rendering highly effective gunfire support missions for US forces at Pohang.

Returning to Korea on January 25, 1952, Herbert J. Thomas joined TF 77 for a month and spent two weeks on the bombline performing vital gunfire support and screening duties. In late February she took up patrol duty in the Formosa Straits. In April she was assigned duty in the Songjin area, and she coordinated the operations of several ships in the Songjin-Chongjin area. On February 27, 1953 the destroyer joined the 7th Fleet Striking Force and screened the carriers launching strikes on North Korea.

From June 14, 1955 to March 1, 1958, Herbert J. Thomas made three more deployments to the Far East. On October 25, 1958 she deployed there once more, serving as a goodwill ambassador for the United States. She trained with Japanese destroyers in antisubmarine exercises and operated again with fast carrier groups. In the summer of 1970 she served as a school and training ship for NROTC midshipmen. She failed a final service inspection in late August, and was immediately tapped for inactivation. After being decommissioned on December 4, 1970 she was transferred to the Republic of China on June 1, 1974. She served in the Republic of China Navy as Han Yang until retired on August 16, 1999. Herbert J. Thomas received six battle stars for Korean War service and three battle stars for Vietnam service.
