HMS Bounty 1/34

HMS Bounty was built in 1784 at the Blaydes shipyard near Hull. The small sailing ship began her carreer as the collier Bethia. The British Admiralty purchased her on May 26, 1787, renamed her Bounty, and recommissioned her in 1787 for a special mission. Bounty was to sail halfway around the world to the tiny island of Tahiti and collect sapling breadfruit trees and transport them to the West Indies, where owners of flourishing British plantations needed a cheap source of food for the workers.

Lieutenant William Bligh was chosen by the Admiralty to lead the mission. On December 23, 1787, Bounty departed Spithead for Tahiti and attempted to round Cape Horn for 30 days. Because of adverse weather, Bligh ordered the ship to turn about and proceed east, around the Cape of Good Hope and across the width of the Indian Ocean. Bounty arrived in Tahiti on October 26, 1788 after a ten-month voyage. Bligh and his crew spent five months in Tahiti, collecting and preparing a total of 1,015 breadfruit plants.

Three weeks out of Tahiti, while enroute to the West Indies with the breadfruit plants, Acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian, angered and humiliated over the continual abuse from Captain Bligh, took over the ship. Of the 44 men on board, 31 sided with Bligh. Of the 31, 18 went over the side to be set adrift in the Bounty's launch with Bligh. The mutineers were in command of the Bounty, having secured all the firearms aboard. They sailed the ship to the island of Tubuai and eventually settled on Pitcairn Island. On January 23, 1790, the mutineers burned Bounty.

Today, there are two Bounty replicas sailing. One was built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia by Metro Goldwyn Mayer for the 1962 movie version of the mutiny. The other was used by Dino de Laurentiis for the 1983 movie. She also took part in the re-enactment of the sailing of the First Fleet to Australia in commemoration of the Bicentennial of the first settlement of the continent.

With the HMS Bounty wooden ship model, one can almost hear the roar of the ocean waves. It is an exact replica of the original, handmade with vigilance, from the very first to the last step. Master craftsmen diligently carve high quality mahogany to create the ship's form. After it is sanded and puttied, skilled artists paint on the intricate details. Hand-casted resin and handmade metal parts also constitute the model. Clear lacquer provides the finishing touch and long-lasting protection. Each ship comes on a a display base with brass pedestals and a brass name plate. All items then undergo quality control and are delivered to eagerly waiting customers in professionally-packaged wood crates via FedEx Next Day Air. More than just a display piece, the Bounty ship model is a work of art.
